The APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), which this year is being chaired by Russia, will begin its work on Tuesday in Hong Kong.

“Tomorrow is a preparatory day, with a meeting of chairpersons of working groups,” ABAC Chairman and Summa Group Board of Directors head Ziyavudin Magomedov told reporters.

The council has six working groups in all, including a new group on infrastructure development, the creation of which was initiated by the Russian delegation.

The meeting will discuss topics that have become traditional for APEC such as regional integration and food security, as well as topics proposed by Russia including transport and logistics chains, sustainable development and eco-cities.

According to Magomedov, the issue of transit is critical to Russia. “If at least 10% of trade between Europe and Asia starts to go through Russia, according to some estimates, this will bring Russian companies up to $50 billion annually,” he said.

Among other things, the members of the BAC will discuss measures to enhance the capacity of Russia’s railways and widen bottlenecks that cause delays on the approaches to Russian ports.

In addition, the council will discuss measures to improve the quality of urban life and the development of regulations that encourage environmentally friendly construction.

The ABAC meeting will run through February 24.
